Are the web filters at your school too restrictive?
I am neither pro or against, more so that I support the use of moderate filtration that filters necessary topic, but not those that is opinionated (political viewpoint, etc). Topic such as violence and sexually explicit contents are rightfully block, but the content or the relevancy to a school's project must be considered. For example, a teacher wanted to show a picture of an island to illustrate the effects of of atomic testing to a classroom, but he is unable to do so just because the town’s name is called “Bikini Atoll” (Source B). The restriction from the school’s filter causes obstruction to his teaching. Another case where students are unable to obtain topics on the internet because of the restriction, such as controversial topic for debate, information needed for AP biology and so on (source C). An analysis from The American Library Association found that these restrictive school web filters jeopardize children’s education, particularly children who are less fortunate and depends on school’s internet access (Source C). While it is understandable for parents to want to shelter their children from offensive and unfavorable topics, they also need to consider the effects it can give on the child’s ability to grow and learn.
