Colloquium on 29/08/19

Attendees: Alma, Iky, Rully, Sammy

Agenda: Discussion of Jacobson’s article on free speech
Facilitator: Alma
Secretary: Sammy

Notes:
- Freedom of speech is a concept where anyone is able to freely express any opinion
- Freedom of speech cannot be restricted if we want to avoid the harmful radicalization of certain groups
- You can ridicule others, but it doesn’t mean that you cannot bear the consequences of anybody retaliating
- You can incite hate, but it doesn’t mean that you can avoid arrest
- You are responsible for what you cause
- At the end of the day, you still need to have respect and civility
- In a perfect democracy, you cannot restrict freedom of speech
- Blocking websites (especially forums and articles) can be a form of a restriction of free speech
- Students face dilemmas when deciding their senior thesis topic because we want to avoid controversy
- “Only seeing the world with one perspective will not work”
- We disagree with plato’s postulation, but we understand why he made it in the first place due to the vast contrast between our time and his
- We all agree on the second idea, however there are many conflicting topics that come with it
- Religion has potential to be manipulated
