  • Here are some suggested reader-response questions to think about while reading and giving feed-back:

Did you like or dislike the story?  Why?

Are the characters realistic?  Flat/round? Static/dynamic?

Describe the major conflict?

Are the good guys good and the bad guys bad, or is there some ambiguity?

What is the author's purpose?

Do you agree or disagree with the author?

How would you understand this story in terms of one of the story cycles: Freytag, journey, a cultural style, or post-modern?

What is the theme or deeper meaning of the story?

Can you think of a completely different interpretation of the story?  A religious allegory, feminist, Marxist?

Does the title fit the story?  What would be a better title?

What allegories, allusions, metaphors, symbols and intertextuality can you identify?

Based on the story, what kind of person might the author be, what kind of self identity issues might be important to them?

Does the story relate to you and your life? If so, how? If not, why not?

Does the text agree with, or go against your personal world view?

What, if anything, did you learn from the text?

If this story were a vegetable, what vegetable would it be and why?

Would this story make a good movie?  A comic book or graphic novel?  A music video?  How so?

If you were the author, how might you have told the story differently?

Did you spot any grammar errors?  What?

Is all capitalization and punctuation correct?

Do you have any suggestions about word-choice?  Could the writing be clearer, more vivid, more descriptive?  How?

Is the formatting attractive?  Could something be improved?
