1. Find the thesis statement in the following paragraph?
Kayla & Syakira: The thesis statement is, “The ways by which American men affirm their masculinity are uncertain and obscure.”
Rayshad: The thesis statement is, “By mid-century, the male role had plainly lost its rugged clarity of outline. Today, men are more and more conscious of maleness not as a fact but as a problem.”
Keisha: The thesis statement is, “The ways by which American men affirm their masculinity are uncertain and obscure.”

2. Which is the stronger thesis statement why?
Keisha: “The Hunger Games is a morality tale about the dangers of a political system that is dominated by the wealthy.” Because, it explains about the morality tale, more about the content, while the first is only telling about the film.
Rayshad: The second one, because the first one is basically only telling what the film is, not detailed.
Kayla: I think it’s neither, it depends about what the essay is talking about, because thesis statement describes the ESSAY in one sentence.
Syakira: The second one, because the second one explains more detailed about the main idea of the paper.

3. Which is the stronger thesis statement why?
Keisha: The second one, it explains about how college student is looking for a part time which is the main idea.
Rayshad: The second one, because the first one only explains it will be harder and it wont help anyone.
Kayla: I think its the second one, because the second one provides a recommendation for the students and it shows the stance of the writer.
Syakira: Its the second one, because it shows the main point that the writer wants to tell the reader/audience.

4. Which statement is incorrect?
Keisha: The first one is incorrect.
Rayshad: The first one is incorrect.
Kayla: The first one is incorrect, because a thesis statement should be able to describe the main idea of the essay in the first paragraph.
Syakira: Its the first one, because the purpose of a thesis is to be written in the beginning, explaining the point of the writing.

5. True or False?
All: We all agree that it is right. Because a thesis means to put forth something, just like what a thesis statement should be.

6. True or False?
All: False. Because as a plural, it is called theses.

7. Which is the stronger thesis statement and why?
Kayla: Second one, because the first one is too broad for a thesis statement while the second one it has a scope of what the writer is going to say.
Keisha: Second one,  because the first one explains about the movie,  while the second has the claim that the author is going to talk about.
Syakira: Second one, because the first one is too broad.
Rayshad: Second one, because the first one only explains about the amount of movies that have been produced.

8. What is the difference between a thesis and an opinion?
Keisha: Thesis is something that a writer want to support by giving out facts and evidences, while opinion someone’s believe on something.
Kayla: A thesis is your stance towards something and can be proven using evidence, while opinion is just a personal views and does not need to be supported by evidence.
Rayshad: Statement that is back up by facts and evidence while opinion is a personal believe,
Syakira: Thesis is the writer’s main point of writing the essay itself and it needs to be supported by facts and evidence, while opinion is just a personal view of something.

9. What is the difference between a thesis, a claim, an argument, and a premise?
Keisha: Thesis is something that a writer want to support by giving out facts and evidences, a claim is something that the writer says without giving evidence and premise is a statement that you consider to be true.
Kayla: Premise is the context/situation that starts off the argument, thesis is a stance in a situation, a claim is what is used to explain a thesis and argument is a rebuttal to an existing claim.
Rayshad: Statement that is back up by facts and evidence, a claim is demand or request for something considered one’s due, argument a set of reasons given with the aim of persuading and premise is an assumption that something is true.

Syakira: Thesis is the main idea of the writer, premise is the base of an argument, claim is writer’s thinking with no evidence or facts, while argument is a set of reason to persuade the others.
