Model introduction and conclusion

Model introduction and conclusion Sand10

AP English Language and Composition supplies a very exact checklist for the form and content of the introduction and conclusion:

Introduction
☐  introduces the writer of the argument to the audience
☐  present the argument’s thesis.
☐  engage ("hook") the audience by presenting quotations, intriguing statements, anecdotes, questions, statistics, data ... or a scenario.

Conclusion
☐ situating the significance of the argument within a broader context,
☐ making connections,
☐ calling the audience to act,
☐ suggesting a change in behavior or attitude,
☐ proposing a solution,
☐ leaving the audience with a compelling image,
☐ explaining implications,
☐ summarizing the argument,
☐ connecting to the introduction.

Last term we focused on introductions.  The conclusion is often neglected compared to other aspects of academic writing, but in fact has a very important role in the essay writing  tradition.  Consider the Rhetorical Choices essay you have started writing.  Finish writing the body of your essay first, or at least have clear what your main arguments and evidence are, i.e.: write the introduction and conclusion last.  Then write your introduction and conclusion, include the AP checklists when you submit your essay, indicating which points from the checklist appear in your introduction and conclusion; use highlighting, underlining, tick-boxes, or otherwise.
