Summarizing

Summarizing Poodle11

Summarizing presents, in your own words, the main ideas of a text in a way that is much shorter than the original.

A.  Discovery and ranking

Form small groups (2-3) and read over the entire task description; complete each section and have it checked by the teacher before going on to the next.  Choose five websites giving information about summary writing.  (i) Give the name and url, and a brief description of each site.  (ii) Rank the sites from best to worst in terms of usefulness.  (iii) Explain the rational for your ranking: what makes the best site so useful, and what makes the site you gave the worst ranking to so poor?

B.  Consolidation

Summarize what you have learned about summarizing into a short PPT of about ten slides.  Present to the class.

C. Applying

Choose any one from the three articles below.  Write a summary of the article of ~150 words.

“For the Love of Poodles Dog Foster Care Manual.” RVA For the Love of Poodles and Pooches, 2019, https://www.floprva.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/For-the-Love-of-Poodles-Dog-Foster-Care-Manua1.pdf .

Isaacson, Suzanne Carter. “Poodles in WWII.” Poodle History Project, 1950, http://www.poodlehistory.org/PoodlesinWWII.HTM .

Cain, Allison. “A Celebration of Poodles.” Poodle Day, 2011, https://poodleday.com/pdf/poodle-variety1.pdf .

D. Evaluating

Look at the summary you have written.  Assess it honestly in terms of the summary writing rubric below.  You will therefore have given your summary a score out of /16.  What were the strengths and weakness of the summary your wrote? ~50 words.
