All the Worlds a Stage
By William Shakespeare

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.

Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.
And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow.
Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth.
And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part.
The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound.
Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

Personal Poem Response

Throughout one lifetime
We get the privilege to play different roles
The biggest role is yet to come
To reach that mountain
Small steps needto be taken
Summit has now been reached
All there’s left to do now
Is just to ride it out
Til’ the end of the line

Essay

The poem titled “All the Worlds a Stage” by William Shakespeare is open to a lot of different interpretations. My interpretation to the poem is that Shakespeare is discussing about how in life, in order to achieve a certain milestone, there needs to be a few steps taken, which is what is written in the poem above. The mood of the poem is somewhat hopeful, because it creates a sense of hopefulness in me when reading this. The poem gave a straight forward, typical, rough statement of what life will look like for everybody. There will be times when it’ hard, there will be times when everybody can handle it.

The poem wasn’t originally a poem, it was supposed to be a monologue from the maestro called As You Like It. As the monologue began, people start to imagine the 7 different stages experienced in life, as if a movie is playing right before their eyes. Shakespeare has managed to successfully create the perfect analogy to life in 7 stages, which everyone could relate to and understand. Throughout this poem, we are able to understand and determine the different poetic devices being used. From what I observed, the poetic devices used in this poem are mostly simile and metaphor, since Shakespeare is comparing a lot of things with life in this specific piece.

Personally this poem means a lot to me after reading and interpreting it because everybody will for sure get through all of these steps written in the poem. I am currently in the school phase, which is written in second stanza.
